Name obfuscation

Makes a player's name show as magic text (§k, the constantly scrambling characters) to chosen viewers. It covers their username and, with Styled Nicknames installed, their nickname too, everywhere those viewers would read it:

WhereWhat they see
ChatThe sender's name on their messages, and the name or nickname wherever anyone types it in a message.
System messagesDeath, join and leave messages, advancements, /say, /msg, command feedback, titles and the action bar.
Tab listTheir row shows the scrambled name.
Name tagThe name above their head is scrambled.

Only what's sent to each chosen viewer changes. The server and other players see normal names.

Start it with the obfuscate_name power or /opp obfuscate.

How names are found:

  • Their display name, as a whole. Vanilla tags a player's display name in chat, death, join and advancement messages with a hover pointing at them. Any part of a message pointing at an obfuscated player is scrambled whole, so a nickname with a gradient or several colors is fully covered.
  • Typed names: anywhere else, their username or nickname is scrambled when it appears as a whole word, ignoring case. Steve in hi steve! is caught. Steve inside Steven is left alone. Nicknames shorter than 3 characters are skipped in typed text, so ordinary words stay readable.
  • Click and shift-click actions on a scrambled name are removed, and hovering shows nothing.
  • Nicknames are optional. Without Styled Nicknames, only usernames are scrambled. Nicknames are read from Styled Nicknames 1.2.1+1.20. With a mismatched version, OPP falls back to usernames.

What stays visible:

  • The magic text is as long as the name, so the name's length shows.
  • Vanilla sends every player's real username to the client, so the Social Interactions screen (default key P), command tab-completion and modded clients show it.
  • Text in the world stays as it is: signs, books, item names, entity name tags, and scoreboard sidebars that list player names.
  • A player always sees their own name normally.

Name tags and teams: the scrambled name tag comes from a team that exists only on that viewer's screen, with magic text as its "color". It copies the player's real team (prefix, suffix, name tag visibility, collision, friendly fire), except the team color, so the name shows in the default color while scrambled. When obfuscation ends, the player goes back into their real team on that screen.

Chat reporting: chat messages are signed. A viewer sees OPP's changed copy, the way chat-styling mods work, and the original stays signed. Vanilla may mark changed messages as modified.
